THE Health Ministry said there was a misunderstanding at Menara City One that resulted in the residents breaching social distancing guidelines.

Director-general of health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Covid-19 checks were supposed to be for residents from one block in the complex but residents from both blocks responded to the call to be tested.

“It is a concern to the ministry because when we checked the report the announcement was made for Menara A but the residents in Menara B also came and that was why there was congestion there.

“We hope that, in terms of implementation, we can improve the practice of social distancing among the residents,” he said at the ministry’s daily press conference in Putrajaya today.

Earlier, residents at Menara City One chided the authorities for failing to enforce social distancing during a mass Covid-19 test last night.

They said the authorities requested all residents to come down to the lobby for checks, adding that social distancing was not observed in the lifts.

Noor Hisham said they had worked with the police to handle the matter.

“They all came down together, so to handle the crowd we worked with the police to calm the situation down and we took some time to ensure social distancing.”

Menara City One was the first high-rise residential area to come under an enhanced movement control order (MCO) in the capital.

The enhanced MCO started on March 31 at the complex on Jalan Munshi Abdullah, involving 3,200 residents in 502 units.

To date, Menara City One has had 51 cases and one death from Covid-19.

In areas under enhanced MCO, basic supplies are provided by the government to the residents, who are confined to their homes, while health authorities carry out active screening.

Nationwide, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has also extended the MCO to May 12. – April 25, 2020.
