16,000 people arrested for violating MCO since March 18

A TOTAL of 15,924 people have been arrested for violating the movement control order since it went into force on March 18, said Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Police arrested 1,174 people yesterday, 1,012 of whom were remanded and the rest released on police bond, the minister said today in a live telecast from Putrajaya.

The day before saw 1,111 arrests.

Ismail Sabri said 369,106 vehicles were inspected at the 820 roadblocks nationwide.

A total of 42,482 spot checks were conducted, 6,856 of them on business premises.

“I would like to remind the public to continue to obey the MCO. I see some have relaxed a bit and are starting to come out as though the MCO is over,” said Ismail Sabril

“I would like to remind everyone that the police will continue their arrests throughout the third phase of the MCO, and that tough action will be taken.”

He said foreigners found to have violated the MCO will face the same charges as Malaysians. Undocumented workers will be sent to the Immigration depots for further action.

Meanwhile, 15,972 individuals are in quarantine at 191 centres. Yesterday, 408 Malaysians returned from abroad and were quarantined.

A total of 13,777 Malaysians returning from abroad have been quarantined since April 3. Since April 18, 2,182 people have been allowed to return home.

The individuals are transported to their homes with the assistance of the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma)
 
“As for quarantined foreigners, the Foreign Ministry will discuss with the respective embassies the process of returning them home,” said Ismail Sabri.  – April 20, 2020.
