Perak police to summon Noor Azmi over tahfiz meal

Perak police chief Razarudin Husain says Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali and attendees of the meal appear to be sitting a distance from each other. – April 18, 2020.

POLICE will summon a deputy minister for allegedly flouting the movement control order by sharing a meal with about a dozen people at a tahfiz school in Perak, Berita Harian reports.

But Perak police chief Razarudin Husain said it appears that all the attendees had observed social distancing rules.

He said initial investigations showed that the deputy minister had travelled to Lenggong to inspect Health Ministry staff there.

Razarudin said the deputy minister was accompanied by several Perak executive councillors, including one who owned the tahfiz school.

“The exco who owns the tahfiz school brought the deputy minister on a tour of the school before a meal for the minister was served by the school.”

He said it is possible the deputy minister didn’t decline the meal as the food had been prepared.

“Based on pictures of the meal that have gone viral, all the attendees, including the deputy minister, sat a distance from each other. But investigations on all who attended will proceed,” Razarudin said.

Earlier today, Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali was at the centre of a social media storm when pictures of him sharing a meal with at least a dozen people at a tahfiz school in Perak went viral.

Commentators on social media accuse the Bagan Serai MP of breaking MCO rules barring gatherings.

There are also heavy curbs on travel, with most people limited to just 10km from their homes for essential business, such buying food or getting medical treatment. – April 18, 2020.

  • Perak police chief seems to have a different interpretation of the MCO. The MCO rules clearly state that only those who are in essential services are allowed to move about and that to only to their place of work. Others may go out only to buy food or get medical treatment or use essential services within 10km distance. The Minister was not at a place of work nor using essential services. If this conduct is allowed then the MCO becomes meaningless and all can flout the law so long as they observe social distancing. Is this what the Perak chief of police suggesting? If the Minister is let off it will be interesting if in any prosecution for flouting the MCO an accused raises the defence that he is not treated equally before the law and is in fact oppressed as the Minister is excused despite breaching the law. As the law is not applied equally the accused can then invite the court to void the law for being unconstitutional in application

  • Then we should be able to sit in a coffee shop to take our meals. Why only take aways allowed? If the food has already been prepared, why not bungkus and take home? Furthermore no mask was seen in the pictures even if they were removed for eating. If ond person were to cough, the rest are within range.
