195 virus cases from 4 sub-clusters in religious schools, says Noor Hisham

THE Health Ministry has traced 195 Covid-19 cases to four sub-clusters linked to the tabligh gathering in Sri Petaling Mosque, said Director-General of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Health officials had worked with the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) and the Sri Petaling Tabligh Syura council in tracing the sub-clusters to madrasah and tahfiz schools, he said in a press conference today.

The four sub-clusters are in Jerantut, Pahang; Penanti, Penang; Sungai Lui, Selangor; and Jasin, Malacca. 

“In Jerantut, 62 tested positive among 401 screened, 297 of which were students and 104 staff and family of staff,” he said

“There were six cases in Penanti among a total 291 screened, of which 256 were students and 35 staff.

“In Sungai Lui, we detected 90 cases among 282 screened, of which 274 were students and eight staff.

“Finally in Jasin, 37 positive cases were identified among 137 screened.”

Dr Noor Hisham said of the 195 cases in the four sub-clusters, 92 had recovered or been discharged from healthcare facilities. Of those who have been released, 20 were in Jerantut, 67 in Sungai Lui and one each in Penanti and Jasin.

The Health Ministry today reported 153 new infections and three deaths in the last 24 hours.

Total cases now stand at 4,683 and the death toll is 76. – April 12, 2020.
