A COALITION of student groups is urging the government to allow those stuck on campus to return to their home states in stages, in view of the extended movement-control order (MCO).
It also called on the Higher Education Ministry, public universities and state governments to work together to provide special transport for these students.
“Transport charges need to be at an affordable rate. It would be even better if the cost is fully subsidised,” said a joint statement by 14 groups, including the National Students Consultative Council, Malaysian Muslim Students’ Coalition, National Muslim Students’ Association, Harmoni Malaysia Youth Association, Kelab Mahasiswa Penyokong PAS, Kelab Mahasiswa Umno and Kesatuan Perwakilan Mahasiswa Malaysia.
The call comes after Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday announced that the MCO is extended another two weeks to April 28, almost a week after the fasting month of Ramadan begins on April 23.
The coalition of student groups recommended that every student on campus be required to undergo Covid-19 testing before they leave for home.
Those who test positive should not be allowed to make the trip, and instead, should be sent for quarantine, it said.
“Precautionary measures should be taken to avoid any risk. If a student’s hometown is in a red zone, we submit to the discretion of the National Security Council to ensure that the evacuation of students following the standard operating procedure is in place.”
It also urged for students’ meals and overall physical and mental health to be taken care of before they are allowed to return home.
“Students should stay calm following the latest developments in the Covid-19 epidemic and continue to adhere to the guidelines issued by the authorities, especially during this period of the MCO.”
Yesterday, the Higher Education Ministry said it will look into the best way to send home students who are still on campus.
Minister Noraini Ahmad said the priority is to send these students back safely and in good health.
In a Facebook post, she said the matter will be discussed at a special ministerial meeting today. – April 11, 2020.
