Cops may question MP over clip of alleged crowding at CIQ building

POLICE will investigate a Facebook page purportedly used to upload a video that has caused public alarm before questioning an MP, who is also a former deputy minister, in relation to the matter.

Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said an investigation paper has been opened over the video, which allegedly showed Malaysian workers returning from Singapore crowding the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex at the Sultan Iskandar Building (SIB) in Johor Baru two days ago.

“Johor Immigration Department director Baharuddin Tahir lodged a police report at the Larkin station about 11.30am today, and the case will be investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he told reporters in the state capital yesterday.

He said the investigation has been taken over by the Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit.

The clip in question not only caused alarm among the people, but also law enforcement agencies, he said.

He confirmed that the video is actually of a fire drill conducted at SIB late last year, and said the individual who spread the clip should have first checked its authenticity.

“If it’s true that it was the MP (who spread the video)... that was an irresponsible act. An investigation paper has been opened.

“Facebook has to confirm (if the video was uploaded by the MP). If it’s true, the MP will be called in for an investigation.”

Ayob Khan said Johor police will increase roadblocks following yesterday’s announcement that the movement-control order (MCO) is extended to April 28.

Police have identified 80 “jalan tikus”, or “backdoor routes”, in the state, he said, and roadblocks will be mounted there.

“In the Simpang Renggam area, which is under the enhanced MCO, there are more than 200 personnel on duty. We won’t add any more, but next week, we will enhance roadblock operations.” – Bernama, April 11, 2020.
