TWO major Covid-19 clusters in Sarawak are now under control and the government does not expect more cases from there, said Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He was commenting on a cluster that began from a church meeting and another involving an index case who travelled to Italy.

“(There are) two clusters in Kuching. That is why you see incidents in Sarawak are higher than other states.

“What is more important is we managed to detect and isolate the positive cases.

“For those who tested negative, we quarantine them for 14 days,” he said at the daily press briefing on Covid-19 in Putrajaya today.

Dr Noor HIsham was responding to a question on whether there were new cases detected from the Italy traveller cluster.

He said yesterday the traveller to Italy had infected 37 people, resulting in five deaths.

The health director-general said that big gatherings had fuelled rapid infections, some up to five generations.

Besides the tabligh event in Sri Petaling in late February, other events that spawned a high number of Covid-19 cases were a three-day church conference in Kuching last month and a wedding in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

The church conference yielded 83 positive cases where two died, with another five still in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).

The Bandar Baru Bangi wedding, which also spread to five generations, had 88 positive cases with one in ICU. – April 6, 2020.
