A CENTRE for Indian heritage and civilization, to be known as the Samy Vellu Centre for Indian Heritage and Civilization, will be set up at AIMST University in Kedah.

AIMST University founder and chancellor S. Samy Vellu said the centre would begin operation the middle of next month.

“The centre will document all publications and articles on Indian heritage and civilisation , with focus on Malaysia, beginning from the 11th century.

“The setting up of the centre is not intended to take over the role of museums or any quarters, but to support such efforts, as well as look into possible studies that can be carried out, especially involving the Indian community,” he told a media conference after opening the university’s 10th convocation in Sungai Petani yesterday.

Also present was AIMST University vice-chancellor Professor M. Ravichandran.

Samy Vellu said the centre would cooperate with agencies in the country and abroad in its efforts to compile information on the history of the Indian community in the country.

A total of 607 graduates received either their diplomas and bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees yesterday.

They included 17 international students from Bangladesh, Egypt, Gabon, Guinea, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.

Rachel Ng Sue Lyn, 24, from the Faculty of Dentistry was the university Gold Medal Award and Best Medical Student Award recepient.

Among the graduates are five students from universities in Egypt who were forced to return home and continue their studies in the country due to the political crisis there. – Bernama, November 19, 2017.
