Ulama want constitution amended to say PM must be Muslim

The PAS Ulama wing wants to amend the Federal Constitution to spell out that the country’s prime minister must be a Muslim.

The motion, which was accepted without debate, said the prime minister has to ensure the country’s administration is always based on Islamic principles.

“As such, the Ulama wing proposes that the central leadership of PAS, through its members of parliament, urge the government to amend the Federal Constitution so that the prime minister can only be among Muslims who fulfil the requirement of leadership in Islam,” the motion said.

The motion added that the move would ensure the implementation of Article 153 of the constitution, which is related to the special rights of the Malays and Bumiputeras of Sabah and Sarawak. Article 153 provides for the allocation of quotas for entry into the civil service, public scholarships and public education.

At present, there is no stipulation in the Constitution to say that the prime minister must be from any particular ethnicity or religion. – April 30, 2017.

  • Interesting proposition which brings up the question of how this is to be implemented. Who determines who is a Muslim and who is not? Will a Shi'ite or a Sufi be eligible? What would be the criteria for judging who is a true Muslim? The number of times he prays? The direction he faces when praying? His diet? The ability to recite a few chosen phrases in Arabic? May I suggest that for the proposition to be implementable it should be restated that only those who claim to be Muslins and look like Muslims should be eligible to be PM. My dear Pas delegates, the externals are all you are going to get! Only God knows the human heart!
