2 die from Covid-19, toll now 45

THE Health Ministry confirmed two more deaths from Covid-19, bringing the country’s total fatalities to 45, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The director-general of health said there were 142 new infections, driving up the number of cases to 2,908.

He said 108 coronavirus patients have been discharged from hospital, bringing the total number of those who have recovered to 645.

Dr Noor Hisham said currently there are 102 patients in the intensive care unit, with 66 on respirators.

The first death was of an 80-year-old woman with a heart condition, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Dr Noor Hisham said she was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital on March 13 and died yesterday at 4.30am.

He said the second person was a 62-year-old Malaysian admitted to the same hospital on March 17. He passed away at 10.46pm last night.

He also suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

In a tweet later, Dr Noor Hisham said 43,462 people have undergone Covid-19 screening in Malaysia.

Of the total, 2,908 (6.7%) tested positive, 32,894 (75.7%) negative, and 7,660 (17.6%) are still awaiting their results.

“This means our country has achieved the World Health Organisation benchmark of one in 10 positive cases,” said Dr Noor Hisham. – April 1, 2020.
