POLICE have identified the culprits allegedly responsible for the data breach involving data of 46.2 million mobile phone subscribers in Malaysia says Inspector General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

He said the data might have been leaked internally.

“We have some leads pertaining to the case and we have identified those involved.

“We know roughly how the data breach happened. It happened when a company was doing a data transaction. Maybe there were staff that have taken advantage of the transaction,” Fuzi told reporters in a press conference in Cheras this morning.

Fuzi ruled out the involvement data theft syndicates and said authorities were trying to determine a motive.

Lowyat.net founder Vijandren Ramadas had previously told The Malaysian Insight that it could have been an inside job as telcos used a closed system not easily accessible from the outside.

“Someone inside could have pulled the data directly from the server,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

The online forum first stumbled on the information on October 19 and labelled it as possibly one of Malaysia’s largest data breach.

The information taken from telcos reportedly included customer names, billing addresses, mobile numbers, and identity card numbers. – November 16, 2017.
