A PUBLIC official today defended his decision to hold a group event while the movement order control is in effect, saying it was necessary to boost the confidence of the poor and needy in the city.

De facto deputy minister in charge of religious affairs, Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said the event to give aid to the poor organised by the Wilayah Persekutuan Islamic Affairs Council was in aide of the people affected by the MCO.

He added that the presence of a minister or a deputy in such a programme would keep up their spirits.

Marzuk said such programmes were held on a small scale according to the guidelines issued by the National Security Council overseeing the MCO in effect until March 31.

“We have limited the number of such programmes. It is to instil confidence and give support to the poor and the people.

“When the minister or the deputy comes to them, it gives these poor people the confidence to be patient in the situation brought about by the MCO,” he said.

Earlier he handed out RM300 worth of food and RM200 cash to each of the 10 recipients in Kampung Baru Air Panas in the city.

Others in the area will have RM500 deposited into their respective accounts next month.

The Pengkalan Chepa MP added that through the programme, the religious authorities could also gather information which would otherwise be difficult to obtain.

“We hear the problems and gather the necessary information which are sometimes difficult to obtain via official channels.” – March 23, 2020.
