Ensure doctors, nurses have their safety equipment

THE Supply Act 2020 (Act A1608) that was passed into law on December 30 had authorised RM29.7 billion to the Health Ministry for its service for 2020.

In a case of a global health pandemic, which we are in now, it would obviously include service to doctors, nurses and all who are putting themselves at risk just to save lives.

And what better service by the Health Ministry than to make sure there are enough personal protective equipment, masks and all related medical safety gears for these national heroes.

While I understand that stimulus packages are important for the future economy as a whole as a result of this pandemic, we must not forget the immediate need for doctors and nurses, which is their safety.

Doctors and nurses cannot be bogged down with logistical issues at this critical time. This is where the Health Ministry comes in to serve.

Health Ministry must buy and make sure all doctors and nurses get the sufficient safety equipment so they can do their job.

While I cannot understand why during this health crisis the domestic trade and consumer affairs minister is looking into masks for the public, but that is a topic for a different day.

I am sure the Health Ministry is doing all that is possible to ensure that there are enough safety equipment for doctors and nurses.

The last thing we want to hear is doctors and nurses complaining of the lack of these equipment, like in the US.

In fact, doctors and nurses must voice out if there is a shortage. It is our duty to make sure that they are protected when doing their jobs.

The Health Ministry should in fact look into giving orders or mandatory directions to local manufacturers to increase production of safety equipment at this critical time, and pay for it. And have them sent out to hospitals. – March 21, 2020.
