GOVERNMENT agencies and trade associations in Singapore are ready to help employers provide temporary accommodation for their Malaysian workers.

Quoting Singaporean Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing, The Straits Times said employers who need to put up their Malaysian staff in temporary accommodation can seek assistance.

He gave the assurance following concern among Singaporeans about the implications of Malaysia’s decision to enforce a movement-control order from March 18 to 31 to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a Facebook post, Chan said Singapore has had for many years a contingency plan in case of a disruption in the supply of food and essential items from Malaysia.

“We have put in place robust plans to manage this scenario, and we will continue to review our strategies to ensure that Singaporeans never run out of food or essential supplies.”

He said the republic has more than a three-month stockpile of carbohydrates, such as rice and noodles.

“For proteins like meat, as well as vegetables, we will use a combination of fresh, frozen and canned options to meet demand, and we have more than two months’ worth of supplies at normal consumption patterns.

“As for eggs, we have local production, and we are also activating air freight options to substitute Malaysian supplies should they be disrupted.”

Last night, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced that Malaysia will be placed under a movement-control order till the end of the month to combat the coronavirus’ spread.

Yesterday, the country reported 125 new cases of infection, bringing the national tally to 553.

In an immediate response last night, Chan said Singaporean businesses that employ Malaysians who commute to the republic daily may have to activate their business continuity plans.

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Manpower Ministry said many companies are making effort to house Malaysian workers who cross the border every day.

It said companies can ask their employees to temporarily stay with relatives, friends or colleagues in the country.

“This may be the option most amenable to some workers,” it said on its website.

For those who do not have this option, said the ministry, the government is working with the private sector to provide them with short-term housing.

It said there are hotels, dormitories, and rooms and whole units at public housing flats and other residential properties that are available for short-term occupancy. – Bernama, March 17, 2020.
