Competition Commission member tests positive for Covid-19

THE Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) has confirmed that one of its members has tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement released this evening, the MyCC said that the person is currently in the isolation ward at Sungai Buloh Hospital and is in stable condition.

“The MyCC is unable to confirm whether the infection had occurred as early as February 29, 2020, but the infected person has not been to the MyCC office since that date,” it said.

Meanwhile, the MyCC also stated it was trying to identify any of the commission or employees who had close contact with the infected member.

“We are working closely with the Ministry of Health on this matter,” it added.

Bernama also reported that Malaysia confirmed its first sporadic case of Covid-19, signalling the first time the coronavirus was detected at random in the community.

A sporadic case means the infected person did not have any travel history to affected countries or known contact with an infected person.

Malaysia recorded 20 new cases of Covid-19 yesterday, bringing the total to 149.

Speaking further, the MyCC also said members of the public who had visited and interacted with the said member of the commission could have been exposed to the virus.

“This advice is intended for the participants, speakers, moderators and secretariat of the Workshop on Recent Competition Issues in Malaysia held at Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on March 4, 2020.

“Please approach a hospital or clinic for testing should you develop any known symptoms of Covid-19,” the commission said, adding that it was postponing all activities until further notice and its office at the Menara SSM will be closed tomorrow.

“The MyCC is currently working closely with the management of the building to conduct a thorough disinfection of the office.” – March 12, 2020.
