DR Mahathir Mohamad clarified that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin did not personally betray him, but the party’s struggle.
The former prime minister clarified his description of Bersatu president Muhyiddin as a “traitor” in the immediate aftermath of the latter taking over as the prime minister with the support of Umno and PAS.
“The word (traitor) does not refer to him. (It refers to) his actions betraying the party’s struggle. Rightly, in Bersatu’s struggle… my views should be prioritised for discussions, but I was flatly rejected.
“So, I was disappointed with the action of those who previously pledged support to me, told me they were fully behind me and not at all interested in becoming the prime minister,” Dr Mahathir was quoted as saying in an interview with Malay daily Sinar Harian.
Muhyiddin previously insisted on being loyal to him but had decided to work with “kleptocrats” simply to gain their support during the recent political crisis, said Dr Mahathir.
He said he was disappointed and angry to see Muhyiddin willing to work with corrupt leaders, such as Najib Razak.
“So, I felt let down. Maybe the word ‘traitor’ won’t seem accurate to some. But for me, those actions count as betraying the cause.”
Dr Mahathir also conceded that he does not have the numbers to stage a comeback and that support has now swung to Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin secured the majority support through his cabinet appointments, said Dr Mahathir.
Muhyiddin could also hand out “sweets” to many people to garner support. He also poured cold water on Pakatan Harapan’s plan to move a motion of no confidence in the new prime minister. – March 12, 2020.
