Anwar rejected Umno offer to abandon Pakatan, says Nik Nazmi

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim had refused to abandon his political allies in Pakatan Harapan (PH) when he was approached by Umno to head a new federal government just before last week’s political crisis, said Setiawangsa MP and party convention director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

If he had agreed to the deal, he would have been the prime minister now, he added.

Nik Nazmi said Anwar had told party leaders about the deal.

“He revealed that prior to the crisis, there was an offer for him to become prime minister with the condition that he abandons our political allies in Pakatan Harapan and accepts leaders from Umno en bloc, including those facing corruption charges in court.

“Naturally, he refused to betray the mandate of the people for the sake of obtaining the prime minister position,” he said in a Facebook posting.

On Sunday, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was sworn in as the nation’s eighth prime minister after his party joined forces with Umno and PAS to take over the federal government.

Earlier, Muhyiddin’s decision to pull Bersatu out of PH saw the collapse of the pact that came to power after the last general election in May 2018.

Nik Nazmi also slammed power-hungry individuals for causing the political crisis, and for betraying the mandate given to PH during the 14th general election.

“History will condemn them as having damaged our democracy and as willing to do anything – including manipulating the truth – for the sake of power.”

He said the political crisis was a severe test on Anwar’s leadership and patience, but “he decided to forsake the position for the sake of the nation”. – March 4, 2020.

  • UMNO has done a good job driving wedges into the Pakatan knowing that there are weak minds which will succumb to temptations. PKR and Bersatu are very vulnerable.

  • Stop the nonsense please. Anwar got 92 seats by promoting himself. If PH were to nominate Tun M, PH will still be the government. Its Anwars self interest that brought down PH.
