BARISAN Nasional must take the opportunity that God has sent in the form of floods to return to power in Penang, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

“God has sent down his wrath upon those who have boasted that Penang is free of floods; but what has happened is that God is showing us that this is the best for us to take back Penang,” he said at the opening of the 46th Gerakan National Conference in Cheras today.

Penang was hit by the worst floods in 20 years last Sunday, which claimed seven lives.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had called Zahid early Sunday morning to plead for help from federal agencies after floods hit 60% of the state, especially Georgetown and Seberang Prai Utara.

Zahid said BN and the federal government had helped sincerely and “colour-blindly” in distributing aid to the state, including announcing a RM150 million allocation for flood mitigration programmes in Sungai Pinang.

He also said BN never politicised the issue, especially regarding the aid given.

“The government cares about the problems faced (by the people) and we want our commitment to be taken positively. The third phase of flood prevention must be conducted. (This shows) the prime minister is a caring and compassionate leader.

“I also helped the people of Penang after seeing the difficulties faced. I was embraced (by the people) because I offered help colour-blindly. This is our attitude in BN.

“(This is also the attitude of) Mah Sew Kong and others on this stage.

“Did we politicise the issue? Not at all,” Zahid said, referring to a picture of him embracing Lim upon arrival at the Butterworth Air Force Base on Tuesday

Meanwhile, Mah who is Gerakan president expressed confidence that this is the perfect time for the party to reclaim the state after losing to DAP and Pakatan Rakyat nine years ago.

“Nobody knows Penang better than Gerakan,” he said during his speech to the applause of some 2,000 attendees.

Mah said DAP was to blame for the uncontrolled development in the state, adding the party had approved 39 projects compared to only eight when Gerakan’s Koh Tsu Koon was chief minister from 1990 to 2008.

“This is four times the amount of what was approved (by the previous administration). Enough with the blame games. You are the state government, take the blame,” he said. – November 12, 2017.

  • Zahid is a pro Islamic statist. He may be politically talented but is ultimately poor anti-liberal governor.

  • Zahid by your analogy it is also God's will that opposition is given the opportunity to wrestle Kedah, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Kelantan, Trengganu and any coming floods in the rest of the states. An idiotic speech and using the God's name in vain. I am still in my stupor of how did you become a DPM!!! I pray that it is not God's will to ensure that the Rakyat see the stupidity of Umno making.

  • Smack of boastful arrogance after his Z-rated show amid Penang mega-floods, tis completely uncalled for (almost CSW's horror gig at MCA Youth assembly) anti-DAP potshot/volley has somehow, unwittingly gotta whatever political brownies reaped by BN last week.Granted, here's `the simple poser as food for contention: Why on earth PAS' rule of Kelantan has never been mocked or ridiculed the aftermath of its equally bigly
floods of late 2014 and early 2015 !??! If not-so-savvy Z-Messrs.'s sole aversion is towards Opposition rule, it's only plausible & fair to ask: Why only acts of Mother Nature or God (or whatever!) are deemed as the wrath of God in Penang but not in Kelantan? Fikir fikirkanlah, wahai Rakyat 2Wilayah,1Malaysia!!!
