MALACCA could be the first state to hold fresh elections following last week’s political turmoil that began with Bersatu dropping out of the then-ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan.

“At 4.30pm, I requested Governor Dr Mohd Khalil Yaakob dissolve the Malacca state assembly in line with Rule 7(4) of the Malacca constitution,” said Chief Minister Adly Zahari in a statement today.

The PH government’s hold on the state was cast into doubt after Bersatu pulled out of the coalition on February 24.

Earlier today, Malacca Umno liaison chief Ab Rauf Yusof said the new Perikatan Nasional pact is ready to form a government in Malacca, with the support of two PH reps.

Rauf Yusof said the pact, which includes the Barisan Nasional lynchpin and Bersatu, has the numbers to take over with the backing of PKR’s Muhammad Jailani Khamis and Norhizam Hassan Baktee of DAP.

Their support, along with Bersatu’s two seats courtesy of Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen and Noor Effandi Ahmad, and Umno with 13, brings Perikatan Nasional’s tally to 17 assemblymen.

PH, minus the seats held by Jailani and Norhizam, has 11.

Malacca will be the second PH state to fall after Johor on February 27. – March 2, 2020.

  • The party that is install to govern after an election should be permanent. Once they lose the majority, an election must be held to find a new government of the Rakyat's choice and not another party with the majority as a result. This will prevent party jumping after an election and give the Rakyat direct rights to choose the party to govern.

This should be the new EC Rule.
