SARAWAK today clarified that although they had thrown their support behind Muhyiddin Yassin, the coalition was not a member of Perikatan Nasional.

The Chief Minister’s Office said the state ruling coalition is only “a political entity in Sarawak that gives support to Tan Sri Muhyiddin in the interest of the nation and to save Malaysia from political instability without sacrificing the interest of Sarawak”.

Muhyiddin, in a media conference after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong appointed him as prime minister, reportedly said that GPS, which has 18 MPs, is a member of the Perikatan Nasional.

“At this juncture, GPS will only be a political party that is friendly to Perikatan Nasional,” the GPS government said as it congratulated the Pagoh MP who was named the country’s eight prime minister today.

GPS Santubong MP Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar earlier said the state coalition had dropped its support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad because of DAP.

Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg at a function in Belaga today said it would be stupid of GPS to support a party that had accused the coalition of not being able to govern the state.

The chief minister had said it is hard to work with DAP, considering it is DAP’s objective to oust GPS in the coming state election.

Abang Johari today explained to GPS members in remote Belaga why the four state parties in GPS abandoned Barisan Nasional after the 2018 general election.

He said it is more effective for Sarawak to fight for state interests and eroded rights outside any peninsula-led bloc that is dictated by consensus. – February 29, 2020.
