PAS, Umno biggest bloc in Muhyiddin’s govt, says Takiyuddin

MUHYIDDIN Yassin’s rise to be Malaysia’s eighth prime minister is the best achievement PAS has reaped from its cooperation with Umno, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said.

PAS and Umno, under the Muafakat Nasional banner, will make up the biggest component in the Bersatu president’s government.

“This is not the first time PAS is in the government. In 1974, we were with Barisan Nasional before we left the coalition. We have also ruled Kelantan for 30 years. And we have been the government in Terengganu and Kedah.

“But this is a big achievement, the best result to come out of Muafakat Nasional we have with Umno.

“So Umno and PAS, together we form the biggest component,” Takiyuddin told reporters outside Muhyiddin’s house, shortly after the latter was announced by Istana Negara as the new prime minister.

Takiyuddin said 114 out of 222 MPs had told the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong they supported Muhyiddin.

PAS has 18 MPs and Umno, 39. Umno’s allies in BN, MCA and MIC, have two and one, respectively. Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s 18 MPs are also supporting Muhyiddin.

The 114 figure takes into account Bersatu’s total of 36 MPs (which includes the ex-PKR MPs under Mohamed Azmin Ali).

Takiyuddin said it was still too early to discuss which cabinet posts PAS would occupy.

He said they had yet to come up with a name for the new government under Muhyddin.

PAS and Umno, once arch enemies for the Malay-Muslim vote, began to explore political co-operation in 2018 after BN lost federal power.

The two parties have co-operated in by-elections in the past two years, formalising their working relationship in September last year. – February 29, 2020.

  • And the fact is that it is not 36 from Bersatu that supported Muhyiddin. He did not count that some from Bersatu whom did not support like Tun M, SS, etc. So it is still questionable on the majority support
