IT is not necessary to dissolve Parliament in the face of the ongoing political impasse in the country, said former inspector-general of police Mohammed Hanif Omar.

Hanif said the dissolution of parliament to pave the way for snap polls was not the right move as this posed many risks.

“The ongoing political crisis is not a reason for Parliament to be dissolved. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong is aware of our concerns,” he told reporters after submitting a memo to the King.

Earlier Hanif, along with another former IGP Musa Hassan and former Dewan Negara president Abu Zahar Ujang, handed over their petition to a representative of the confidential secretary to the King, Nazim Mohd Alimi.

Hanif said the petition was prompted by the current political situation and was an effort by various civil society groups to uphold the Federal Constitution.

”We are also against the proposed unity government. While there is no implication to national security, but in terms of accountability, who will they answer to?

“The key here is to follow the constitution. Let the Yang di-Pertuan Agong make a decision. If he decides on a dissolution then we will accept it,” said Hanif.

Also present were several groups such as Gerakan Pembela Ummah, the Malay Consultative Council and the Malaysian Army Veterans Association. – February 28, 2020.
