Malay rulers arrive at Istana Negara for special meeting

THE Malay rulers have arrived at Istana Negara for a special meeting of the Conference of Rulers.

The meeting was called to discuss the country’s ongoing political crisis.

The Malay rulers are the heads of state in Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Johor, Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

The meeting was scheduled to start at 11.30am.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has taken on the role of mediator to stabilise the political situation.

On Monday, Pakatan Harapan collapsed when Bersatu announced its exit from the pact. The same day, Dr Mahathir Mohamad quit as prime minister and Bersatu chairman.

The king has since appointed him interim prime minister, and Dr Mahathir has returned as Bersatu chair.

Sultan Abdullah also conducted private interviews with MPs over two days to determine who they support as the next prime minister.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir said a special Parliament sitting will be held on Monday to determine the leader with majority support, failing which, snap polls will be called. – Bernama, February 28, 2020.
