DR Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement about the king’s decision on how the next prime minister would be chosen was inappropriate, Pakatan Harapan said today.

It said in a statement that in doing so, the interim prime minister had challenged the rights and powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Earlier today, Dr Mahathir had said that Parliament will be summoned on Monday to find a leader who has the majority support to become prime minister.

This, added the interim prime minister, is being done as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has not been able to find any MP who commands majority support in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.

PH’s presidential council, which convened an emergency meeting at a hotel in Petaling Jaya tonight, also said that any decision by the Conference of Rulers, which will meet tomorrow, must be respected.

Pakatan Harapan added that the king has the right to decide who should be the next prime minister, in accordance with the federal constitution.

After the meeting, PKR strategic communications director Fahmi Fadzil said that the important thing is to respect the Malay rulers and accord them the space to deliberate.

“We have to allow the Agong to issue his decree on this matter. After that is clear, then I think we can discuss when the appropriate time is (for the next prime minister).

“We have also not received any official notice on the parliamentary sitting on Monday. We will wait for the announcement by the speaker,” he said.

The nation’s political landscape was plunged into chaos on Monday when Dr Mahathir made a surprise announcement that he was resigning as prime minister.

Since then, his party, Bersatu, has quit the PH pact, leaving the federal government in disarray.
