INTERIM prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he has no qualms if Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin becomes the next prime minister.
He said during his two-hour meeting with Muhyiddin, the possibility of the Bersatu president being chosen as prime minister was discussed.
“There were various possibilities that we discussed, including the possibility that Muhyiddin might become a candidate for the post of prime minister.
“If everybody (MPs) chooses him, I’m okay. If he goes to Parliamnet and gets a full majority, then he has the right to become PM,” Dr Mahathir said after launching the economic stimulus package in Putrajaya today.
He said Muhyiddin was more accepting of opposition members.
“My position is I will not accept Umno, but I will accept those who leave Umno.
“But Muhyiddin is ready to accept them. Whoever wins I will accept them to be the prime minister,” Dr Mahathir said.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir said Parliament will be summoned on Monday to find a leader who has the majority support to become prime minister.
He said this is being done as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has not been able to find any MP who commands a majority in the 222-seat Dewan Rakyat.
It was also reported that Dr Mahathir has returned as Bersatu chairman today and hinted that he is building support to form his own government.
The interim prime minister left Istana Negara at noon after an hour-long meeting with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He only waved to reporters camped outside the palace.
Moments later, Bersatu said Dr Mahathir is back as its chairman – after relinquishing the post this week – and to wait for further announcements.
Dr Mahathir said he was asked to come back as chairman by Bersatu three days ago.
“I asked them to postpone it (my decision) so that I can think about it. So today, I decided to come back as chairman.” – February 27, 2020.
