Johor Pakatan government falls

THE Pakatan Harapan government has fallen in Johor, said the palace.

In a statement, private secretary to the Johor sultan, Jaba Mohd Noah said Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has decided that the Pakatan Harapan government no longer commands a majority in the state assembly.

The sultan made the decision after interviewing the state’s 54 assemblymen on February 26. The statement confirms that a new coalition now has 28 assemblymen compared to Pakatan Harapan’s 26.

Jaba said two assemblymen – Simpang Jeram and Puteri Wangsa – did not attend the interview.

Simpang Jeram is held by Amanah’s Salahuddin Ayub and Puteri Wangsa, by Bersatu’s Mazlan Bujang. Salahuddin was scheduled to meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara at 1pm yesterday.

“Pakatan lost its majority in the Johor state council, following Bersatu’s withdrawal from the coalition on Monday,” said Jaba .

“Johor Menteri Besar Dr Saharuddin Jamal together with Johor Umno chief Hasni Mohammad then had an audience with Sultan Ibrahim on Wednesday and informed him that a new coalition had been formed with sufficient majority to form a new state government.

“To verify their claims, the sultan ordered a series of interview with the assemblymen from 3pm-5pm yesterday,” said Jaba.

He said that each assemblymen also signed a statutory declaration to confirm whether they supported PH or the new coalition government.

After the interviews were completed, Sultan Ibrahim was satisfied that the new coalition had the majority to form the government with 28 votes for the new coalition versus 26 for PH, said Jaba.

“His Majesty has thus ordered that a new Johor government be formed immediately to ensure peace and stability in the state,” said Jaba.

Prior to the fall, the PH government in Johor had 39 of the 56 state seats, which are held by DAP (14), Bersatu (11), Amanah (9) and PKR (5). Barisan Nasional has 16 – Umno 14 and MIC 2,  while PAS has 1. – February 27, 2020.

  • Yes let them form the government and see how far they can take the state. If they fail, PH can come back again in the next GE.

  • Looks like the big guy in yellow is eager beaver to change the state government even though two of PH members have yet to be interviewed by him?
