BREAKING his silence since quitting PKR, Baru Bian today rubbished claims that he supports the removal of Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister, saying the latter has his “100% support”.
The former works minister, who said he was away in the remote Baram highlands village of Bario over the last two days for a scheduled arrangement, congratulated the 94-year-old Dr Mahathir on his appointment as interim prime minister.
Baru also called on his supporters in Sarawak to give him and two other MPs who left PKR “a bit of time” to work on “a peaceful solution to the political impasse”.
The former state PKR chief, along with Saratok lawmaker Ali Biju and Puncak Borneo’s Willie Mongin, resigned in solidarity with sacked deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali yesterday. They are now part of an independent bloc.
“Those who have been observing us would know that our team’s (Azmin faction) stand has been very consistent over the past 21 months and it will remain so, that Dr Mahathir continues as prime minister until the next general election.”
He said he is “happy to note” that those who previously called for Dr Mahathir’s resignation have “done a U-turn, and are now in tune with our call”.
“This proves that our stand has been correct all along,” he said in a statement.
“I reiterate that we have the fullest confidence in Dr Mahathir to lead us and realise his shared prosperity vision as he brings the nation together in reconciliation and healing.”
Baru added that he remains committed to ensuring Sarawak continues to realise its rights and is no longer denied the development and prosperity it deserves.
“Our struggle remains intact. Our track record of fighting for the poor and marginalised is clear.
“I assure our supporters that YB Ali, YB Willie and I, with the rest of our colleagues, will continue to act wisely and humbly, always in the interests of our people, Sarawakians, and our nation.”
The Dayak National Congress, however, strongly condemned the action of those who attempted Sunday’s “outlandish coup d’etat”.
Its president, Paul Raja of DAP, said: “We know that these politicians are overly ambitious ruling-party politicians working together with opportunists and crooked politicians from the opposition.”
Though no names were mentioned, the comment appears aimed at the Azmin camp in PKR, as well as Umno and PAS.
Raja described the leaders “from (the) ruling party involved in the plot” as “politicians in a hurry”.
Enraged voters are baying for blood over the broken promises and betrayal, he said.
“Rest assured, these unprincipled politicians will be buried in the next general election.” – February 25, 2020.
