THE Yang di-Pertuan Agong has urged Malaysians to be patient as he determines the right person to become the next prime minister.

“We are very concerned. Just be patient. First of all, let me do the meeting (with MPs).

“I hope we will find the best solution for the country,” Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah told members of the media camped outside Istana Negara to report on the latest developments on the appointment of a new prime minister and government.

The king also provided the journalists with lunch.

Earlier today, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the Agong will interview MPs individually today and tomorrow to help him decide who should succeed Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The ruler will meet a group of 90 MPs starting 2.30pm today, and the rest tomorrow.

“His Majesty will conduct the interview himself, and it will be witnessed by the chief secretary to the government,” said Fadil.

He added that each lawmaker will have an audience with the king for two to three minutes.

Malaysian politics is in turmoil following Dr Mahathir’s resignation as prime minister yesterday.

Things got worse after Bersatu pulled out of Pakatan Harapan, leaving the pact without a majority in Parliament.

While PKR, DAP and Amanah are trying to honour the mandate given by voters in the 2018 elections, PAS and Umno are working with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and sacked PKR No. 2 Mohamed Azmin Ali to form a new government.

Yesterday, the king accepted Dr Mahathir’s resignation, but appointed him interim prime minister until a new administration is formed.

The cabinet was dissolved along with Dr Mahathir’s resignation. – February 25, 2020.
