THE Bersatu supreme council has rejected Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as chairman, said Rafiq Naiza Mohidden.
The supreme council member said the party wants Dr Mahathir to continue leading the country, and take Bersatu to a higher level.
“The supreme council has rejected his resignation. We want him to continue leading the party,” he told reporters after a meeting at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya last night.
He said Bersatu’s MPs will indicate their support for Dr Mahathir to continue as prime minister when they meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The party has 26 parliamentarians, including Dr Mahathir.
The 94-year-old statesman quit as prime minister this afternoon. About two hours later, he announced his resignation as Bersatu chairman.
He remains a member of the party, which he founded shortly before the 2018 general election. – February 25, 2020.
