We’re not traitors, say 11 who quit PKR

THE 11 former PKR MPs led by sacked deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said their moves over the weekend to secure support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad were aimed at ensuring the country’s stability.

They said they did not want Dr Mahathir to be forced to set a date for his resignation, as changing the head of government midway would give the wrong message to the people and investors.

“The moves we made were to ensure that the people and investors remained confident in the stability and continuity of the government’s programmes through the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

“A mid-term transition of power would disrupt this continuity and affect the people’s perception of the Pakatan Harapan government.

“We are certain that the attempt to force the prime minister to set his resignation date is a malicious one aimed at turning him into a ‘lame duck PM’,” said the group in a statement issued at a hotel in Pusat Bandar Damansara, where they are meeting tonight.

“We reject those who have labelled us traitors. They are the ones who are the traitors by attempting to bring down the prime minister mid-term, because they are more interested in taking the prime minister’s power to implement the government’s policies, which are aimed at restoring the economy and improving the people’s welfare.”

Besides Azmin, the 10 other MPs who signed the statement are Zuraida Kamaruddin (Ampang), Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Baru Bian (Selangau), Kamaruddin Jaffar (Bandar Tun Razak), Mansor Othman (Nibong Tebal), Rashid Hasnon (Batu Pahat), Santhara Kumar (Segamat), Ali Biju (Saratok), Willie Mongin (Puncak Borneo) and Jonathan Yasin (Ranau).

Dr Mahathir was to have handed over the reins to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November.

That Anwar will succeed him was agreed by all PH parties before the 2018 general election.

However, Azmin’s faction in PKR had urged Dr Mahathir to stay on for a full term, butting heads with others in PH who wanted the 94-year-old statesman to fix a transition date to end speculation.

The issue was supposedly settled on Friday night, when the PH presidential council agreed that Dr Mahathir would determine his own resignation date.

But, the Azmin camp proceeded with plans to gather MPs, including from the opposition, in a show of support for Dr Mahathir at a dinner yesterday, amid talk that the move was aimed at breaking up the PH government and forming a new ruling coalition with Barisan Nasional and PAS.

  • A traitor is one who destroyed voters' Malaysia Baru agenda for personal selfish interests. Who will ever trust one who is willing to sleep with crooks and the corrupted at all expense.

  • Well I suggest that you stop consorting with crooks and thieves. Announce your intention to be aligned with PH even though you are an independent bloc to prove that you are not traitors to the country

  • What you stupid people did has sent the country into a tailspin. Have you even considered the repercussions of your naive actions on the countrys economy and how how it will affect the peoples lives?. The country is in turmoil now, the stock market has crashed, we lost 45 billions in the stock market. The foreign investors are selling out and taking their money elsewhere. The administration of the country is at a standstill. Dont you guys use your brains? Or do you even have one?

  • Res ipsa loquitur. They claim they are not traitors but the facts show that they have put their self interest above the nation's interest. Why this despicable act instead of working hard to improve Malaysia?
