Markets fall on rumours of Bersatu-Umno-PAS govt

THE Kuala Lumpur Composite Index was down 1.8%, or 27.61 points, at 9.30am on news that Bersatu would form a new government with Umno and PAS yesterday.

Across the board on all platforms, the bourse was in the red in all 29 indices.

Among the top losers were Carlsberg, which fell RM1.84 to RM37.10, followed by Heineken Malaysia Bhd (-RM1.74) to RM29.30, and F&N (-90 sen) to RM29.64.

Berjaya Sports Toto fell 6sixsen to RM2.58.

Among the most active counters, were MYEG which rose 1 sen to RM1.31 followed by SAPNRG (-0.5 sen) and Alam (-1.5 sen)

The nation held its breath yesterday on talk that the Bersatu party and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali were ready to leave Pakatan Harapan to form a new government.

Besides Bersatu, Umno and Gabungan Parti Sarawak also held meetings in the capital.

Late last night, more than 131 MPs from the opposition parties joined Bersatu’s Muhyiddin Yassin and Azmin at dinner at the Sheraton Hotel in Petaling Jaya.

The politicians did not issue any statement to explain what the gathering meant.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not attend the dinner nor was he at a meeting at Istana Negara where the king had reportedly held audience with six leaders from political parties on both sides of the divide. – February 24, 2020.
