ANWAR Ibrahim said he will be patient and leave it to Dr Mahathir Mohamad to decide when to step down as prime minister.

“Our stand is clear. There is no doubt about our commitment. Dr Mahathir can continue his duties as prime minister with full support.

“In our discussion, I suggested that Dr Mahathir be given the chance to govern and decide on the right time (to resign). I have to be patient in the meantime,” the PKR president told a press conference after a Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting last night.

He was responding to a question on his view of the council’s decision on the transition plan.

At the presser, Dr Mahathir said the council is letting him determine when to step down.

Though it is agreed that he will do so after November’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, no timeline was set at the meeting.

“No time, no date, nothing (is set).

“It has been left to me, whether to let go or not. That is the trust given to me by the party.”

Prior to the meeting, there was intense speculation about when Dr Mahathir would resign, and whether the presidential council would be able to come to an agreement on the matter.

Anwar supporters have urged that the handover take place in May, which will mark two years since PH wrested federal power from Barisan Nasional.

However, Dr Mahathir has repeatedly said since last November that he will resign only after this year’s Apec summit, to be held in Kuala Lumpur. – February 22, 2020.
