THE National Arts Gallery will reinstate four artworks by visual artist Ahmad Fuad Osman to an ongoing exhibition after taking them down earlier this month for allegedly being political and obscene, said a spokesman.

“The four artworks will be reinstated and displayed until the end of the exhibition on February 28,” the spokesman said.

He added that a programme with the artist and curator will also be held on February 21.

However, no actual date as to when the artworks will be reinstated has been given.

The gallery is expected to officially issue a statement on the matter soon.

This development comes on the heels of Fuad’s statement to the gallery to stop the exhibition if it refuses to reinstate the artworks.

He said the gallery did not consult him or the curator before removing the pieces.

Fuad said the gallery’s management already vetted and approved the pieces when it was deciding on the artworks to be displayed last October.

The gallery’s objection is to an artwork titled Imitating the Mountain, an oil painting showing a man lying naked against a backdrop of mountain ranges.

The other three artworks are Untitled (2012), Dreaming of Being Somebody Afraid of Being Nobody and Mak Bapak Borek, Anak Cucu Cicit Pun Rintik. – February 16, 2020.

  • If the nation wishes to eliminate incomoetence, then in this case, the entire board tasked with running the National Gallery should be dismissed and replaced with people who know what they should be doing. Vacillating behaviour should not be encouraged.
