DR Mahathir Mohamad thanked the opposition for its plan to table a motion of confidence in support of his leadership but reminded Umno and PAS that he is already the prime minister.

“I have no idea what they are going to do. I’m already the PM. They want to support me, thank you-lah,” Dr Mahathir told reporters today after attending a dialogue today.

Yesterday PAS said it will be discussing its proposal to move for a vote of confidence in Dr Mahathir with Umno at its muafakat nasional monthly meeting today.

The Islamist party’s deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said a vote of confidence should be put through in Parliament due to the political instability caused by the agreement to hand over the post of prime minister to Anwar Ibrahim.

Tuan Ibrahim said the proposal was private, could be taken by any MP and it was up to the house to accept or reject it.

“As Dr Mahathir himself says, parliamentarians decide whether he should continue or he should resign,” he said.

In an interview with The Malaya Post portal on Saturday Dr Mahathir said while he would keep his promise to hand over his duties to Anwar, the final decision would have to be made in Parliament.

He added that even if a candidate comes from a party that enjoys a majority but he himself cannot command majority support, then the candidate won’t be able to become prime minister.

Tuan Ibrahim declined to answer whether PAS will go ahead with the motion if Umno was not on board. – February 10, 2020.
