PAS will table a “motion of confidence” in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership in the March sitting of Parliament, said its deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.
His comments follow rumours that PAS wants to form a new coalition government with Dr Mahathir’s party Bersatu and another opposition party, Umno.
Tuan Ibrahim said the move is PAS’ way of resolving the uncertainty over the transition of power, which it claimed is affecting political and economic stability.
“We will send it early so that it can be accepted by the Dewan Rakyat speaker,” he said.
A leaked audio recording purportedly of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that the Malay nationalist party will back PAS’ attempts to forge an alliance with Dr Mahathir and Bersatu.
Zahid gave several reasons Umno should cooperate with Dr Mahathir and Bersatu, partly because PAS is doing so and the party can’t risk being left behind.
Speaking to reporters today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan attempted to further justify the party’s move when there has not been any attempt to move a no-confidence motion against Dr Mahathir.
“We are troubled with dissatisfaction towards the prime minister. But till now, there has not been a motion of no-confidence against Dr Mahathir in Parliament.
“Going by the parliamentary process if there are parties that are dissatisfied, they can bring a motion of no-confidence against the prime minister.
“The prime minister will then have to resign or advise the king to dissolve Parliament.”
PAS’ motion is to test how much support Dr Mahathir has to remain as prime minister, Takiyuddin said.
The move is also in line with Hadi’s support for Dr Mahathir to stay on and finish up his term.
Takiyuddin denied suggestions that the motion is part of plans to form an alliance with Bersatu and Umno. – February 8, 2020.
