BERSATU has sorted out its membership roll and has declared that nearly 382,000 members are eligible to attend the party’s branch and division annual general meetings, said party secretary-general Marzuki Yahya.
According to Marzuki, the meetings are scheduled to take place from February 15 to March 29.
“After the GE14, we received numerous applications from the public to join Bersatu. It was a challenge for us at the beginning to make sure that they are in the correct branches as recognised by the Registrar of Societies.”
“Before we finalised their names, we gave the members an opportunity to choose their own preferred branches,” he told a media conference today.
Marzuki said at least 144,000 people will be representing the women’s wing, while 102,000 will represent the youth chapter.
He added that there are also people who have had their membership revoked.
“Their memberships were cancelled after we found out that they had also applied to be members of other political parties after registering with us,” Marzuki said.
He added that 50 people had quit the party while Bersatu’s disciplinary board are investigating a number of cases involving sabotage.
Marzuki urged members to abide by the party’s rules and constitution.
“We have to abide by the rules set by the party as well as its constitution,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said that as of January 2020, Bersatu has 430,000 members but anyone who has joined this year is not allowed to attend the meetings.
“Only those who registered before December 31 as party members can attend.”
Last month, Bersatu chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced new dates of the party’s annual meeting in Putrajaya.
“The branch meetings will be held from February 15 to March 29, while the division meetings will be on April 18 and the annual general meeting will be held from June 25 to 28,” he told reporters.
Previously, the party said the branches’ annual meetings will be held from January 25 to March 1, before the division annual meeting that will be held simultaneously on April 4. – February 5, 2020.
