MINISTER in the Prime Minister’s Department Dr Mujahid Yusof today expressed regret over the actions of cosmetics entrepreneur Muhammad Sajad Kamaruzaman who performed the umrah (minor pilgrimage) dressed in a “telekung” (female prayer garments).
Mujahid said the actions of Sajad, or popularly known as Sajat, and his friends in the Holy Land had tarnished the image of Islam.
“His IC (identity card) says he’s a man and biologically he is a man… and he wanted to go Mecca. I was made to understand that everything was fine during the flight and he was properly dressed in male attire, but when in Mecca, he put on the ‘telekung’.
“I truly regret his actions… even more so when he uploaded photos (of himself wearing the ‘telekung’) on Instagram like nothing’s wrong,” he told the media in Putrajaya today.
Mujahid said he would seek answers pertaining to the matter from the relevant quarters, including the travel agency which sold the umrah trip to Sajad and his family and friends.
The minister said he believed Sajad’s actions would not affect Malaysia’s haj quota.
“This is more about an individual’s personal issue,” he said.
