Almost 3,000 flood victims in Kedah evacuated


THE number of people evacuated due to floods in Kedah has increased to 2,721 as of 8pm, from 1,906 earlier this evening.

State Civil Defence director Lieutenant Colonel (PA) Mohd Zul Khairi Shamsuddin said the victims, from 730 families in Kuala Muda, Yan, Kulim, Bandar Baharu and Baling, were seeking shelter at 39 relief centres.

In Kuala Muda, more than 15 centres are open, including the Kampung Bongkok surau, housing 60 people, Kampung Padang Tok Sora surau (72), Taman Bedong Jaya hall (80), Taman Malinja surau (50), Kampung Bujang hall (86), Kampung Sungai Pial hall (165), Kampung Jilid 4/5 surau (70) and Kampung Lebai Ali surau (298).

In Yan, there are four relief centres, namely the Kampung Perigi Kemas kindergarten, housing 18 victims, Kampung Teroi Bukit surau (89), Kampung Lubok Boi surau (69) and Kampung Kepala Bukit surau (66).

In Kulim, 14 evacuation centres are open, including the Masjid Al-Muqtadin hall, housing 147 victims, SK Taman Selasih (164), Taman Kancil surau (112); SK Permatang Tok Dik (51), SK Sungai Seluang (87), Padang Limau Kemas kindergarten (199) and Al-Ikhlas Karangan surau (91).

A relief centre has been opened at the Sungai Batu hall in Bandar Baharu, housing 25 victims, while 104 evacuees are seeking shelter at the Kuala Bakong Mosque in Baling. – Bernama, November 5, 2017.
