UNIVERSITI Utara Malaysia (UUM), which has 422 students from China, will conduct additional screening on its campus for faculty, staff and students who visited China recently.
The extra measure will be done even though screening by the Health Ministry is already conducted at the country’s entry points, said deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Yunidah Ibrahim.
“These are a few more proactive measures taken to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus,” she said in a statement today.
The university has also postponed all its activities in China for the time being.
The additional screening, conducted by the university’s health centre, will be carried out for the next 14 days.
“Even though they have already been screened at entry points by the authorities, they will again be screened by the university’s health centre upon arrival at the UUM campus.
“UUM will continue to monitor developments on the coronavirus through official channels, and urge all university members to take precautions,” she added.
The death toll from the new coronavirus which originated in Wuhan, China, is current at 132 since the outbreak was first reported in late December.
In Malaysia, seven people have tested positive for the virus and are currently in isolation and receiving treatment. All of them are China nationals. – January 29, 2020.
