THE Selangor government is giving flood-hit Penang RM1 million to assist the state’s recovery from the disaster.

Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali said he had also instructed local authorities in Selangor to send personnel to help Penang clean up after the floods.

Local authorities in Selangor have been told to come to Penang with their equipment to assist in the clean-up efforts.

“Volunteers from Selangor have also been arriving in Penang to help families affected by the floods. Some 300 of them will be here.

“This is a small effort by Selangor to help Penang through this difficult time, but I am glad to see that the state, especially the island, is recovering.”

Azmin visited Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at Komtar today. He was earlier briefed on the flood situation at the Penang Island City Council’s CCTV control room.

Azmin said Selangor sympathised with Penang over the disaster, which saw more than 3,000 people evacuated from their homes.

He said he was happy to see Lim on top of the situation, monitoring it around the clock since the floods began yesterday.

Azmin also visited the Central Seberang Prai district office in Jalan Betek in Bukit Mertajam, together with Lim, after his stop at Komtar.

The heavy rain that lasted some 15 hours yesterday and the strong winds that came with it wreaked havoc in Penang.

As of 8pm today, more than 3,000 people across the state’s five districts had been evacuated, with 511 from the island and the rest from the mainland.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said the disaster had claimed six lives so far. – November 5, 2017.
