5 suspected poachers arrested in Sabah animal sanctuary

FOUR local men and a Filipino suspected of being poachers were arrested in the Sukau Wildlife Sanctuary in Kinabatangan last night.

Seized were weapons, boats and a slaughtered deer.

Beluran General Operations Force Battalion 20 commanding officer Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said the suspects were nabbed about 11.30pm in the sanctuary’s Sg Tandu Batu area, where they had set up camp.

“The confiscated items include a handmade gun, a live bullet and a parang.

“Also seized were a 6m boat with a 15-horsepower engine, a 4.5m boat with an 18-horsepower engine and the carcass of a deer.

“The value of all the seized items is about RM33,000,” he said in a statement today.

He said the camp was destroyed by Sabah wildlife officials, who took part in Op Khazanah.

The suspects, aged between 33 and 51, are being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. – Bernama, January 27, 2020.
