Coronavirus or not, flights to China continue out of KLIA

FLIGHTS between China and Malaysia are operating as normal even as Chinese authorities grapple with the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak.

Seventy-four China flights arrived and departed from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and klia2 today. Of this, 35 flights arrived and departed from KLIA while 39 from KLIA2. 

A Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) representative confirmed the figures to The Malaysian Insight. 

However, the representative declined to comment if there had been any cancellation to the China-Kuala Lumpur routes by any of the airlines. 

On January 23, 2020, Malindo Air and AirAsia suspended flights from and to Wuhan as the Chinese city went on lockdown to fight the disease that has so far killed 41 people and sickened about 2,000.

Today, Malindo Air has confirmed that seven of its crew members have been quarantined in Zhengzhou, China, as a precautionary measure.

The seven had been on a Zhengzhou-Kuala Lumpur flight on January 24, where a passenger from Hubei province was on board, the airlines said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The passenger is suspected of contracting the novel coronavirus, which originated in Hubei provincial capital of Wuhan.

The coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan, Hubei province, has killed 56 people and left almost 2,000 ill.

Malaysia has four confirmed cases of infection, as has Singapore.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said the spread of the novel coronavirus is not at the stage where tourists should be turned away from entering the country. – January 26, 2020.
