PKR has rejected calls from Azmin Ali’s supporters in the party’s Youth wing to reconvene its congress that was marred by fighting.

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution denied claims raised by PKR Youth deputy chief Hilman Idham that the congress held in Malacca last month did not follow procedures.

“Hilman’s actions are more about factional clashes. He should stop. The focus should be on building the party,” he said when met by The Malaysian Insight in Bandar Baru, Kedah.

He said Hilman’s justification that fights at the congress was reason to hold it again, was not strong enough.

“The congress was held according to the (party) constitution where delegates present are not bankrupt and have no criminal cases. The financial and annual statements of the wings were presented.

“If all these things are carried out, then there are no issues. If there are fights then it is not an issue that can affect the congress,” he said.

Yesterday, Hilman, an aide to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, led a group of 19 PKR Youth leaders who demanded that the wing’s congress be reconvened because of rioting that took place.

The group, seen to be allied to Azmin, also demanded that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) investigate the proceedings.

Saifuddin said the youth wing’s congress could be held again only if RoS found that the rules were not followed.

“But the congress has already taken place according to the terms set by RoS. I think the call to RoS should be made on a sound basis, even the party making the call must be careful and understand the party’s constitution,” Saifuddin said.

The group also demanded that RoS review the legitimacy of the sacking of seven pro-Azmin PKR Youth leaders.

PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir on January 16  said the seven were sacked because they did not attend meetings.

The 19 members also strongly supported PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin who faces disciplinary action over her criticism of the party, in particular PKR president Anwar Ibrahim. – January 26, 2020.
