STOP talking about the prime minister transition issue in the open and respect the consensus that was reached by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership in January 2018, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
In a four-paragraph statement today, he said he has promised to support Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the country and strengthen the economy.
“Pakatan and Dr Mahathir have repeatedly stressed their commitment to ensure the transition will take place as agreed.
“As such, it is important to respect that decision for a smooth transition process,” said Anwar who is also Port Dickson MP.
Anwar, however, stopped short of saying whether the transition should take place in May or November.
Although, Dr Mahathir had said he would only step down in November after the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) meeting in Kuala Lumpur in November, Anwar’s supporters have been calling for a May transition.
On January 14, four MPs linked to Anwar held a public forum to call for an earlier transition.
The MPs believe that Anwar should be given more time to implement his policies and that an earlier transition would boost local investor confidence.
An open war of words has also started among PH leaders on the transition issue. – January 22, 2020.
