WARISAN lost in Kimanis tonight because the people of Sabah have yet to realise the goodness of the new state government, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said despite the defeat he remained confident that the Warisan government was still popular in Sabah.

“That (defeat in Kimanis) is because the Sabah people have not yet seen the goodness of the new administration. All that that we have done will take time (to show results),” he said tonight in Alor Star.

Take, for example, the changes we have introduced in the agriculture sector. Don’t expect instant results.

“I am confident that in the long run the people of Sabah will realise they have a good government in Warisan.

Barisan Nasional (BN) tonight took back the Kimanis parliamentary seat when its candidate Mohamad Alamin won by 2,029 votes, polling 12,706 votes to his opponent from Warisan, Karim Bujang’s 10,677.

Rejected votes numbered 320. Voter turnout was 79.92%

Returning officer Jupari@Jupry Eto announced the results at 9.30pm at the counting centre in Dewan Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Dun Banir.

The by-election was called after the Election Court last year nullified Kimanis MP Anifah Aman’s win in the 2018 general election.

Anifah, who won the seat on a BN ticket, quit Umno in September 2018 to go independent. He had held the seat for 20 years after winning it for the first time in 1999.

In the last election, Anifah polled 11,942 votes to win by 156 votes over Karim’s 11,786. The third candidate, Jaafar Ismail of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, received 1,300 votes.

Mohamad, 48, is the Kimanis Umno chief. Former five-term Bongawan assemblyman, Karim, 67, is the Kimanis Warisan chief.

  • Sabahans doesn't agree with Dr M high handed politic. How can u use your PM position to allow Bersatu to accept all the Umno reps? U don't respect the choice of the voters. Dr M is outdated with today's young voters mentality. We need competent, honest and selfless(not selfish)leaders. We trust the system and process more than any single or group if leaders But u r not reforming the instituitions fast enough and dare enough. We are disappointed, u are Not changing fast enough to deMo to us u r sincere to reform the country. We want to try out Anwar.
