Why is G25 harping on Jakim, asks Mujahid

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa says matters relating to Jakim have been laid out to G25 in two meetings last November. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, January 14, 2020.

MUJAHID Yusof Rawa has questioned the motive of G25 in continuing to raise issues regarding the Malaysian Islamic Development Department’s (Jakim) establishment.

A detailed explanation has already been given to the group of former civil servants, said the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.

Among the matters laid out in two meetings with G25 last November were Jakim’s establishment, enforcement efforts and allocation received, he said.

“I don’t understand why this is still being argued. The perception created can cause worry among certain quarters,” he told reporters after a gathering with agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya yesterday.

It was reported on Saturday that G25 said Jakim and the National Council of Islamic Religious Affairs are unconstitutional, as there is no provision for these agencies to be set up at the federal level.

Mujahid said Jakim is the result of an “evolution of the religious administration”, starting out as a unit under the Prime Minister’s Department and becoming the Islamic Affairs Division before being “upgraded” in 1997 to its current form.

The agency is important for the coordination of Islamic affairs at the national level, he said, and can be declared unconstitutional only if it intervenes in the administration of such affairs in states, where the sultan is the head of religion.

Of the RM1.3 billion allocation Jakim received for this year, 60% is to pay the salaries of imam and religious teachers, and the remainder is for administrative purposes, including paying staff wages, he said. – Bernama, January 14, 2020.

  • By all means and for the benefit of all, try avoid the possibility of any belief being exploited. The best way is to keep it away from politics.

  • Because Jakim is a waste of taxpayer monies and fails to promote progressive Islam. Only good for catching non-fasters during Ramadan month.
