DR Mahathir Mohamad as acting education minister is a mix of good and bad for Chinese education groups.

Some feel the prime minister’s long experience in government and running the country will bode well for education reforms, while others reject the policies he attempted to introduce while in office previously.

  • PPSMI is better than the present Sekolah Kebangsaan where these subjects learned are not effectively applied in real life. At times, these subjects learned in the native tongues become unhelpful for further learning in overseas institutions.

PPSMI is a good initiative to almagate the various communities too.

Making this initiative a choice will see more local students getting onboard this scheme over time.

We are moving back to pre-1981, 1981 was the year where the last batch of MCE and HSC students graduated. These students have no difficulty going to any commonwealth countries to further their studies.

  • Why must science and maths be thought in English. Just look at China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia & HK where these two subjects are taught in the countries respective national languages. Its not the medium of instruction but more importantly, the availability of competent teachers to teach both subjects. National schools to teach in Bahasa, whilst the vernacular schools in their respective medium of instruction. Just a suggestion

    • Why don't you look at Singapore! Their education system has been regarded as one of the best and they teach in English. Even the UK and many other countries educationists are looking at the Singapore teaching methods to improve the UK education system!
Why singapore kids have no problem learning maths and science in English but not our kids.

  • The language nationalists are popping their heads up again. Learning science and math in English besides the mother tongue will help our children progress in an international environment. Masses of parents in China are spending tons of money to get their children educated in English-speaking countries. Obviously they see the value in it.
