ANTI-GRAFT chief Latheefa Koya is now the target of a “criminal plot” to tarnish her reputation after the release of the audio recordings of former prime minister Najib Razak and others discussing ways to cover up the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.

In a statement this evening, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief said a criminal plot has been set in motion to fabricate and distribute materials intended to smear her reputation.

“We believe that a lawyer is among the culprits involved in this  plot,” she said without naming anyone.

“My special officer will lodge a police report early tomorrow morning and hand over evidence of this to the police.”

The MACC chief warned that she will not be threatened or intimidated from carrying out her duties.

Latheefa caused a stir last week when she released nine audio clips of phone conversations involving Najib with foreign leaders, a senior deputy public prosecutor and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

The recordings showed individuals talking to Najib about the 1MDB scandal and how it affected Najib and his stepson, Riza Aziz, following the US Department of Justice revelations in 2016.

The conversations took place between January and July 2016 and showed how the parties involved were conspiring to cover up the case.

According to Latheefa, the recordings were sent to MACC by an unknown source after the new year.

She described it as a “criminal conspiracy at the highest level”, adding that there are serious issues such as abuse of power, criminal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, compromising national security, fabrication of false evidence through foreign aid and others.

In her statement this evening, Latheefa said she will not be threatened or intimidated from carrying out her duty as MACC chief commissioner.

“The public has placed great faith in the MACC to cleanse our country from the scourge of corruption.

“I intend to carry out this duty, no matter what personal attacks or threats are made against me, now or in the future,” she added. – January 13, 2020.

  • PDRM must nail down the criminal plots straight away. This is extremist move to destabilize a govt instituition. They dare to do it but dare not asMit then wrong doings. When someone expose them, they use their illegally acquired money to defame, criminalize, sabotage or trap MACC for checkmate them. Quickly put these country robbers and supporters to jail so that they can't damage the country further.

    • Hopefully PDRM too would act efficiently and with integrity in their investigation, arresting all these high level criminals who are desperate to cover up and threatening MACC and Latheefa
