AN estimated 67,385 children were born in India on January 1, the highest number of births recorded worldwide on New Year’s Day, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) said.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the agency said 392,078 babies were born across the world on New Year Day, with India ranking tops with 67,385 births.

“The beginning of a new year and a new decade is an opportunity to reflect on our hopes and aspirations, not only for our future, but the future of those who will come after us,” said Unicef executive director Henrietta Fore.

“As the calendar flips each January, we are reminded of all the possibility and potential of each child embarking on her or his life’s journey – if they are just given that chance.”

According to Unicef, more than half of all the births took place in eight countries. – Bernama, January 3, 2020.
