No go for Gamis protest against Dong Jiao Zong, say police

POLICE consider the street rally planned for tomorrow by the Malaysian Muslim Students Coalition (Gamis) against Chinese education group Dong Jiao Zong as unlawful, Malay Mail reports.

According to the report, Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan Abdullah said the protest violated the Peaceful Assembly Act.

No notice had been provided by the group on the rally that was to be held in the city centre in the Masjid Jamek and Sogo area.

“The peaceful protest is not valid. I have not received any notice from them regarding their assembly tomorrow,” Fahmi was quoted as saying.

Gamis should also have obtained written permission from Kuala Lumpur City Hall if it intended to march on the streets.

According to the Act, any organiser of an assembly must formally notify the officer in charge of the relevant police district five days in advance.

The organiser must also get the approval of the owners of the property where the event will be held.

A poster of the protest that read “Himpunan Bangkit Pertahankan Jawi: Haramkan Dong Zong (Rally to defend Jawi: Abolish Dong Zong)” was widely shared on social media today.

Set to start at 2pm, protestors were to hold a march from Masjid Jamed to the Sogo shopping complex.

Last week, Gamis deputy president Mohd Zofrie Zulhilmie Ruslee said Dong Jiao Zong’s reluctance to accept introductory Jawi lessons in vernacular schools could lead to a “repeat” of the May 13, 1969 racial riots.

He had also called on the Home Ministry to ban the Chinese education group.

The DAP Socialist Youth had also lodged police reports on his remarks in several states. – December 31, 2019.

    • Please do NOT deride the honest working class who are trying to earn a living, I do know quite a few of them whom are highly educated taking up the food delivery job to earn their keep while looking for a suitable job instead of just sitting on their butt. And yes, I'm proud to say that many of my friends from all races are not a racist like this fellow who just like to stir trouble for their own political gain.
